Apple Camera AirPods Could Debut as Soon as Next Month

Apple Camera AirPods rumor with Visual Intelligence features

Apple Camera AirPods rumor with Visual Intelligence features

Apple Camera AirPods could arrive sooner than expected, according to a new 9to5Mac report based on Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter and references found inside iOS 27 code. The rumor suggests Apple may have a camera-equipped AirPods variant far enough along to debut as soon as next month.

The idea sounds unusual at first, but it fits Apple’s current push toward Visual Intelligence. Cameras on AirPods would not be about taking ordinary photos like an iPhone. They would more likely help the earbuds understand the user’s surroundings, feed context to Apple Intelligence features, and support future wearable computing experiences.

Two camera AirPods projects may exist

9to5Mac says Apple’s long-discussed camera AirPods project has been known internally by the codename B798. That version was reportedly planned for 2026 before being pushed to 2027. The new twist is that Apple may also be developing another version, codenamed B790, which appears to be further along.

According to the report, B790 references have already appeared in iOS 27 code, and the device has been on Apple’s internal roadmap for a possible debut this year. Code references are not a product launch guarantee, but they often show that hardware support is being prepared before a public announcement.

If both projects are real, Apple may be testing different versions of the same wearable idea. One could be a simpler first-generation product, while the other could be a more advanced model planned for 2027. Apple often develops competing internal versions before deciding what is ready for market.

Why Apple would put cameras in earbuds

The main reason for Apple Camera AirPods would likely be context. AirPods already handle audio, microphones, noise cancellation, conversation features, health-adjacent signals, and tight iPhone integration. Adding cameras could let the product see enough of the surrounding world to power visual assistance without requiring the user to raise a phone.

That could support features such as object recognition, translation, environmental awareness, navigation help, or reminders tied to what the user is looking at. It may also become part of Apple’s longer wearable strategy alongside Vision Pro and rumored smart glasses.

The privacy challenge would be serious. A camera-equipped earbud sits near the user’s face and could point outward during normal use. 9to5Mac notes previous reports that suggested longer stems to house the cameras and an LED indicator for when data is being sent to the cloud. Clear indicators and strong permission controls would be essential if Apple wants public trust.

How this fits Visual Intelligence

Visual Intelligence is Apple’s umbrella for features that help the iPhone understand what the camera sees. Bringing that idea to AirPods would make the experience more ambient. Instead of unlocking a phone, opening the camera, and pointing it at an object, a user might trigger an assistant through earbuds and receive audio guidance.

That is where the product could become more than another AirPods Pro refresh. Apple’s competitors are already exploring AI glasses, wearable cameras, and always-available assistants. Apple Camera AirPods could be a step toward that world without requiring Apple to ship full smart glasses immediately.

The product would still need a clear reason to exist. AirPods are popular because they are simple, comfortable, and reliable. Adding cameras could increase cost, weight, battery demand, and privacy sensitivity. Apple would need to make the benefits obvious enough that buyers see the cameras as useful, not gimmicky.

September timing remains uncertain

The most attention-grabbing detail is the possible September timing. Apple usually uses its September event to introduce new iPhones and major accessories. If a B790 AirPods model is ready, that event would be the natural place to preview or announce it.

Still, the report leaves room for caution. Apple can delay hardware late in the process, and code references do not always translate into immediate launches. The differences between B790 and B798 are also unclear, and it is possible that only one version eventually reaches customers.

For now, Apple Camera AirPods look like one of the more interesting wearable rumors around Apple’s next product cycle. If Apple can connect cameras, privacy, and Visual Intelligence in a way that feels natural, AirPods could become more than audio accessories. They could become Apple’s first mainstream step toward AI wearables that understand the world around the user.
