New iPhone 18 Pro dummy units are offering an early look at what could be Apple’s next major design change for its premium phones. The latest leak suggests the iPhone 18 Pro Max may become slightly thicker around the camera system, while the foldable model widely referred to as the iPhone Ultra is also appearing in physical mockups.
iPhone 18 Pro Max may get a thicker camera plateau
According to 9to5Mac, the leaked dummy units shared by Max Tech’s Vadim Yuryev indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be thicker than the current generation once the camera hardware is taken into account. The reported change is tied to a more pronounced camera plateau and larger lens protrusion, which points to upgraded imaging hardware inside the device.
The leak claims the overall thickness measured from the camera system rises from 12.92mm on the iPhone 17 Pro Max to 13.77mm on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Measured from the camera plateau, the increase is said to move from 11.23mm to 11.54mm. While that may not radically change how the phone feels in hand, it does suggest Apple is willing to trade a little more bulk for stronger camera performance.
The foldable iPhone Ultra is also showing up in leak material
The same dummy-unit discussion also references Apple’s rumored foldable model, which some reports continue to call the iPhone Ultra. That device is expected to launch as Apple’s highest-end iPhone and could introduce multitasking features such as running two iPhone apps side by side.
Dummy units do not confirm final specifications, but they often give accessory makers an early sense of size, proportions, and hardware shape. In this case, the appearance of both Pro and foldable mockups adds more weight to the idea that Apple is preparing a broader design split between its mainstream flagship and its future ultra-premium device.
Why this leak matters
Apple’s annual iPhone upgrades are often judged on how much visible hardware change they bring. A thicker camera system on the iPhone 18 Pro Max would reinforce recent reports that Apple is prioritizing camera improvements as one of the clearest ways to keep Pro models attractive. At the same time, the continued appearance of iPhone Ultra leaks suggests Apple’s foldable ambitions are moving closer to reality.
If these dummy units reflect Apple’s final design direction, the iPhone 18 family could arrive with a more obvious split between photography-focused Pro hardware and a new foldable flagship aimed at users who want the company’s most experimental form factor.
