Reddit CEO Questions Google AI Overviews as Stock Falls

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman discussing Google AI Overviews and search traffic

Google AI Overviews are facing new scrutiny from Reddit CEO Steve Huffman after Reddit’s stock came under pressure and the company used its latest investor communication to question whether AI search summaries are creating a fair exchange for platforms that supply the underlying discussion data.

Ars Technica reported that Huffman used Reddit’s quarterly earnings cycle to criticize Google’s AI Overviews, the feature that summarizes search results directly on Google pages. The concern is simple: if users get the answer on Google without clicking through, sites that host the original conversations may lose traffic even as their content helps power the answer.

Why Google AI Overviews matter to Reddit

Reddit sits in a sensitive position in the AI search economy. Its forums contain years of human discussion, product advice, troubleshooting, personal experience, and niche knowledge. That makes Reddit valuable to search engines and AI systems that need fresh, messy, real-world answers beyond polished publisher pages.

The problem is that value can be hard to price. Traditional search sends users to Reddit threads, where Reddit can show ads, build logged-in engagement, and convert some visitors into repeat users. Google AI Overviews can change that flow by presenting a synthesized answer before the user reaches Reddit or any other source.

For Reddit, that raises a direct business question. If Google benefits from Reddit’s user-generated discussions, but Reddit receives fewer visits in return, the old search bargain starts to weaken. Huffman’s reported comments suggest the company is still looking for a model that works for both sides.

The licensing question is getting harder

Reddit has already made content licensing part of its AI strategy. Large language models and AI search products need training and retrieval data, and Reddit’s communities are unusually useful because they reflect opinion, comparison, and lived experience. But licensing only solves part of the issue.

If a platform licenses data to an AI company, it may receive direct revenue. If that same AI product reduces future search visits, the platform may also lose audience growth, ad inventory, and brand visibility. That is why the debate around Google AI Overviews is broader than one contract or one quarter’s stock move.

Publishers have made similar complaints. News sites, review sites, forums, and independent blogs all worry that AI summaries can absorb the benefit of their reporting or community knowledge while making the original page optional. Google argues that AI search can still drive discovery, but many site owners are watching referral traffic closely.

Why Reddit stock adds pressure

The timing matters because Reddit is now a public company. Public investors judge the company on revenue growth, user growth, ad performance, data licensing, and the durability of its traffic channels. A concern that might once have sounded like a product-policy dispute now becomes a market question.

If investors believe search changes could slow Reddit’s traffic or weaken its advertising business, the stock can react quickly. That does not mean AI Overviews alone caused Reddit’s share-price movement, but it does explain why Huffman’s comments carry weight. Reddit’s relationship with Google is now part of the company’s public-market story.

The risk is not only traffic. Reddit’s core asset is community participation. If people believe their posts are mainly being mined for AI answers elsewhere, some users may question what they get back. Moderators and contributors already care deeply about attribution, control, and platform trust.

Search is becoming an AI negotiation

The deeper shift is that search is no longer just a list of links. Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, Perplexity, and other companies are all trying to answer more questions directly. That creates convenience for users, but it also forces a negotiation with the web that supplies the raw material.

For Reddit, the best outcome would be a system where AI products can use community knowledge while sending meaningful traffic, revenue, or attribution back to the source. For Google, the challenge is preserving the usefulness of AI summaries without weakening the open web that makes those summaries possible.

Google AI Overviews are therefore becoming a test case for the future of search. The question is no longer whether AI can summarize the web. The question is whether the companies that create and host the web’s knowledge will still see enough value to keep feeding that system.
