Social Media Fatigue Shows Platforms Are Becoming Less Social

Social media fatigue as users post less and watch more algorithmic video

Social media fatigue is becoming harder for platforms and marketers to ignore. A recent Incogni survey cited by Social Media Today found that many users are posting less than they did five years ago, while social apps are becoming more like entertainment feeds powered by algorithms and short-form video.

The shift does not mean people are abandoning social platforms entirely. Instead, the public posting layer is weakening. Users are still scrolling, watching, sharing privately, and messaging friends, but fewer people appear willing to maintain a visible public presence. That changes the value of social media for creators, brands, and publishers.

Why social media fatigue is rising

The Incogni survey found that 55 percent of respondents are posting less to social media than they did five years ago. That aligns with a broader pattern: people increasingly share updates inside private direct-message groups instead of public feeds. Public posting now feels less like casual connection and more like performance.

This is not completely new. Online communities have long followed a participation pattern where most people read, a smaller group reacts or edits, and only a tiny minority creates consistently. Pew Research found in 2019 that roughly 80 percent of tweets were produced by 10 percent of users. The difference now is that the pressure on that active minority has intensified.

More than half of survey respondents said maintaining a social media presence feels like work. That line explains much of the burnout. Posting is no longer only about friends seeing a life update. It can mean optimizing captions, managing replies, avoiding controversy, checking metrics, and competing with professional creators.

Algorithms made social media less social

Social platforms increasingly prioritize content that keeps people watching, not necessarily content from people they know. Short videos, recommendation feeds, political clips, and viral outrage can hold attention even when users are not posting themselves. That helps explain why time spent can rise while public participation declines.

The result is a strange contradiction. Social apps may still be growing as media products, but they are becoming weaker as social spaces. Users open the same apps, but the experience is closer to television, gaming, or news consumption than conversation with a personal network.

Political and divisive content adds another layer. Algorithms often reward posts that trigger strong emotional reactions. That can give creators a rush of engagement, but it also pushes many ordinary users away from posting. For them, the safer option is silence, private groups, or simply taking a break.

What social media fatigue means for creators

The creator economy adds pressure because younger users often see online influence as a possible career path. The success of major creators makes the opportunity look simple from the outside, but the economics are harsh. Social Media Today points to research showing that many creators earn modest income despite consistent effort.

That gap between expectation and reality contributes to social media fatigue. A user may start posting for fun, then feel pushed into constant production. Over time, the platform becomes a workplace without stable pay, clear boundaries, or guaranteed results.

For brands, this means creator partnerships should be evaluated carefully. A smaller number of active creators may command more attention, but audiences are also more sensitive to forced content. Useful, honest, and visually clear posts are more likely to work than generic engagement bait.

How marketers should respond

Marketers should stop assuming every platform is primarily a public conversation space. Many users now treat social apps as entertainment channels and private sharing tools. That means content needs to earn attention quickly, but it also needs to be worth sharing privately.

The strongest strategy is to create content people can use, save, or send to a friend. For product brands, that may mean clearer demonstrations, proof of quality, behind-the-scenes context, or concise answers to common buying questions. For publishers, it means explainers, timelines, and practical summaries that work even when the reader does not comment publicly.

Social media fatigue does not mean social media is dying. It means the public social layer is shrinking while algorithmic entertainment and private sharing are growing. Brands that understand that shift can still reach people, but they need to design for quieter, more selective audiences.
